Exciting News!!! The New Horizons Orchestra now has a summer schedule. Whether you played many years ago or are just starting, this orchestra can support your ambitions. Our director, Mikaela Vanator, is an enthusiastic viola virtuoso with a passion for teaching, and she does it very well. The classes are relaxed and we play fun music in many different styles. So if you've ever wished you could play in an orchestra, now is the time to do it as we are still growing our orchestra. For more information, you can contact me or call the Community Music School to sign up for summer classes.
One of the ideas behind New Horizons was to give individuals the opportunity to play music in a low stress, encouraging and fun group environment, even if the individual has never played an instrument before or hasn’t played in years. New Horizons is an international organization and we are lucky to have a representative group that practices at the MSU Community Music School. See the video of the history of New Horizons Music on the video page. There are also current videos of the MSU New Horizons Bands performances.
Music is and was often offered as part of elementary education but most stop playing after graduation or don’t play regularly. There are not the opportunities to continue for amateur musicians and there are other things to occupy our time. But if you enjoyed playing music before, or if you have never played an instrument before but always had an interest and wished you could play an instrument, New Horizons can fill the void.
There are two things that make New Horizons different from most other community bands. The first is that there are no expectations for you to be a professional musicians. In fact, there are no auditions required because everyone is welcome. If you’ve never played before, you can learn here. If you learn just one note and you are able to play that note when it appears in a piece, then you are contributing to the group. We are an ensemble that relies on and supports each other to sound good as a group and every one contributes. The second thing that makes New Horizons different is the encouragement to grow. Not just from the director but the community of musicians that you sit with. This community of musicians come from a wide variety of backgrounds and all come together for the excitement and adventure of learning music.
This website is a personal page managed by me to promote my interest in the East Lansing Community Music School New Horizons Band and Orchestra at Michigan State University.
